The IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
… are the definitive standards for the electrical industry which everyone must follow when carrying out any domestic or commercial electrical installation work.
They set requirements and operating criteria for the UK and correspond to EC standards in respect of safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems.
In July 2018 the previous 17th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations were updated to the new 18th Edition, with every installation from March 2023 now needing to be designed to comply with the new latest Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018+A2:2022.
The City & Guilds 2382-22 18th Edition Course
… leads to a qualification officially known as the Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018+A2:2022.
The 18th Edition course is an essential electrical qualification, suitable for both newcomers to the industry, associate trades and those looking to update their existing qualification. It is also a requirement for anyone interested in joining a competent person part p scheme provider – like NICEIC – and to certify that their installations meet current regulation guidelines.
As with the previous course there are 8 units to study, 7 related to the parts and 1 to the appendices of the BS7671 IET regulations – and a 2 hour open book exam at the end.
18th Edition Amendment 2 – March 2022
Amendment 2:2022 to BS 7176:2018 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations came into effect on 28 March 2022 and will apply to any electrical installations designed after the 28th of March 2023. It is the first full amendment to the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations [published 2018]. It will also include Amendment 1:2020, which was published as a standalone PDF in 1st February 2020.
There are a number of minor changes for BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 but some of the most significant ones include:
- A new requirement for Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) in some AC final circuits for installations in some types of higher-risk residential buildings
- The requirement for the fire safety design of buildings to be documented where specific conditions of external influence exist, such as protected escape routes and locations with risk of fire
- Method for determining the requirement to provide overvoltage protection
- Changes to identification, labels and notices, such as for consumer units, affecting how safety information is provided to the user of the electrical installation
- A Chapter on Prosumer’s Low Voltage Electrical Installations, in a new part, Part 8.
Further details about the changes in Amendment 2 can be found on the IET website – and details about the updated 18th Edition Online Course can be found here.
Who Is The 18th Edition Qualification For?
The City and Guilds Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 qualification is primarily aimed at practicing electricians with relevant experience.
And if you want to join, or renew, a Government Approved Part P Scheme Provider, like NICEIC or ELECSA, then the 18th Edition qualification is particularly essential.
There are however other associated professionals e.g. surveyors, consultants, and other trades, who will also need to update and enhance their understanding of the IET Wiring Regulations.
If your occupation requires you to hold the latest IET Wiring Regs certification then the time is fast approaching for everyone to be up to date. If you’re looking to get started on your 18th Edition qualification then you can find out more just below.
